Myth II: Soulblighter is Bungie's follow-up to Myth: The Fallen Lords, the 1997 Game of the Year. It featured improved graphics and gameplay and was a continuation of the story from the original game. It is by far the most popular of the games in the Myth trilogy with over 1000 community made addons including several conversions from World War II through Science Fiction game types.

When Bungie was acquired by Microsoft, the development of Myth II came to an end. The original game was designed to run on the original Macintosh OS (Mac OS 8 & 9) as well as Windows 98. With the advent of Mac OS X, the game faced a questionable future as the "Classic" Macintosh OS was gradually phased out by Apple.

With source code acquired by MythDev, development of Myth II was handed off to Project Magma who produced a version of Myth II designed to run natively in Macintosh OS X and modern versions of Windows. Project Magma took the opportunity to fix several known gameplay issues and performance issues and produce an enhanced and updated game that exceeded the scope of the original game. Unfortunately, some of these enhancements had the side-effect of breaking compatibility with some of the community-created modifications already in existance for the original game.

The purpose of this project is to produce a "Classic" version of Myth II that is true to Bungie's original development. It is merely an upgrade of the v1.3 release of Myth II to natively on Intel based Macintosh computers as well as Windows XP, Vista, and 7. The goal is to restore compatibility with the original Myth II modifications that were packaged with the Myth II: Worlds collection and other distributions of the game, as well as provide a streamlined and simplified interface to make gameplay easier to manage.

Tech: Myth II was written in procedural C. It was built upon the source code of previous Bungie games and featured a lot of code from those games. During the upgrade process, the rendering engine was converted to OpenGL. While the "software rendering engine" remains, the other rendering engines have been removed.

Development: Myth II Classic is still under development and it's release is forthcoming. It will include re-mastered cut-scenes from the original Quicktime files.
