Playing LRM-519 Recorded Video On Your Computer

Several years back, I bought an LG LRM-519 Digital Media Recorder as a way of thumbing my nose at "the man". I didn't feel like spending the money for TIVO and then having a subscription to pay for on top of that, so I bought an LRM-519 for $299 as it was being sold on clearance. While the reviews from people are mixed, I've had nothing but great success with mine. It records what I want it to, when I want it to and has been a life saver for me not wanting to miss my favorite episodes of whatever while I am either working late, out of town on business, or doing other things.

The one big drawback had to do with it's "Share to PC" option. You can offload the files from the unit to your local Windows computer. The problem with this is that I've never been able to get the files I've dumped to play on my PC.... until today.

I purchased a video conversion program called Alive Video Converter (http://www.alivemedia.net/videoconverter.htm) which will recognize the output files and convert them to a quicktime format (or any of a few dozen other formats). The quality of the conversion seems to be pretty dang good too. So if you're wanting to dump those TV shows off your LRM-519 and archive them to a media center (like I have) then this will make that a much easier go of it. There is a cost of $35 to register the program, otherwise it will only convert 60% of the video, but that is a pretty reasonable price for an efficient and useful piece of software.

I can't get the base file exported from the 519 to play or open in either Quicktime Professional or Windows Media Player - so the conversion step seems to be necessary. If anyone has any other tricks to help with this, I welcome them here.
